Rolling Road Day
The XR4Register at Power Engineering 23rd April 2005

Even though this has taken months to organise, finally the day of reckoning came, our very own Rolling Road Day at Power Engineering. As you can see from the above pic we had a wide range of cars although this was only a few as other's were still tweeking, nursing their cars and others had left for the journey home by the time we got the camera out.

First of all a BIG thank you to Chris & Ian at Power Engingeering for a great & eventful day. We had an excellent turnout of XR4's in various forms aswell as Rob Field's XR2, Phil Pearce's RS 1800 and last but not least Caz's Peugeot 106 XSI.

Everybody arrived in once piece and promptly even after a slight detour via junction 1 of the M1 (say no more Gengis!), good job Pete D had his sat nav gizmo attached to his 4i.

The day went smoothly with some surprises & a few casualties (nothing major). Armed with some advice from PE and a few tweeks by Bhav & Daz, we even had time for some people to have a 2nd run, so overall we all went home smiling. However, Gengis's smile didnt last very long as it was wiped off by the boys in blue for having an illegal number plate!.

Finally, armed with our discounted Powerflex bushes, powerplots and our bellies full of bacon butties, tea & coffee courtesy of PE we all ended the day on a high. Even the clampers did not even dare to take us all on when most of us did park on the road for the final group photo.

*STOP PRESS*
For all those that participated, a refund will be issued to you shortly either at the next pub meet (1st May) or the next show (FITP 15th May) or via post. Also as we took movies of each car on the rollers, we will be putting these onto a CD for all the people who attended this event. Hopefully these should be ready for everyone at the next pub meet or next time I see you guys or via post.

General shots taken throughout the day

A nervous Paul was first up with his standard 2.8 however he was happy as larry when he saw the output figures.

Chris's comments:
Rev counter was out but otherwise the car performed well.

Gengis's mint XR rolled onto the rollers unfortunately not all went to plan, once the car was strapped down onto the rollers and fired up, it was clearly evident that the back wheels were going round quicker than the front wheels.

Chris's comments:
The transfer box has died so I've decided to abort the run.

After the first run on his other 2.8 Sierra, he was eager to see what his 4 pot would do. Slightly disappointed by the output however now he knows what the problem is.

Chris's comments:
Had to do the run in 3rd as there was not enough power to run in 4th gear. The fuelling also need to be looked at.

With John's famous dump valve woosh all the pat pending under the bonnet obviously paid off.

Chris's comments:
Fuelling was spot on and the car performed well.

After a few bacon butties to settle his stomach its was Ken's turn on the rollers. He admitted to us afterwards that he was really nervous and could have done with a change of undies, he was well chuffed with the outcome (good job he wasn't wearing a kilt).

Chris's comments:
Rev counter out but nice power produced.

We think this car likes to be with Chris at Power Engineering as Dave had a long walk home because its still there!, car was no way near normal figures so tweeking time was needed and a 2nd run attemped but still had problems.

Chris's comments:
What have you done to this, it was alright when I had it. I think the supercharger belt is slipping and you have major heat issues.

Chris's Comments run 2:
Bugger that will be your belt gone then!.

The first run was stopped (172bhp) as the car was pinking like hailstones on a glass roof!. Obviously fuelling was an issue. Ross was going to call it a day but Bhav said he could tweek his fuel pressure regulator. Having dismantled it, it was seized due to lack of use and so they raided James's fuel pressure regulator and had another attempt.

Chris's comments:
I think you have a pinking issue

Chris Comments run 2:
A massive difference from the first run

The car that everyone has heard about finally made an appearance. We were told it was a bit of an animal not sure if this was the car or the driver. Many people would have been happy with his first run but Daz was dissapointed as his NOS hadn't kicked in. A timing tweek later and heating his NOS bottle up he was ready for another run.

Chris's comments:
Is your NOS bottle empty as it was much better than this before.

Chris's Comment 2nd run:
Think you have just armed the NOS and not turned it on as it's better than the 1st run due to timing tweek but has still performed better before.

Alan's garden find was next with home made induction kit. We all obviously missed this edition of Blue Peter!.

Chris's comments:
Good power produced from a 2.0 GT

Smoking like a trooper and were not just talking about James!. After a poor 1st run (151bhp) Bhav reset his ignition to 18 degrees, James attempted a second run.

Chris's comments:
You have a poorly turbo there.

Chris's Comments run 2:
What ever you did mate it certainly improved it but you still have turbo problems.

Initially Chris (PE) had problems locating the steering wheel but he soon realised it was left hand drive. 1st run on origianl ECU with factory timing but Pikey wanted to have a 2nd run with a re-mapped ECU and tweeked the timing.

Chris's comments:
Its nice to see a varied range of cars but not sure what its supposed to produce.

Slightly disappointed after his 1st run (174bhp) Bhav suggested re-setting the timing, apparently it was supposed to set at 15 but was actually 11 to his surprise. Timing tweek later Pete decided to run his car again.

Chris's comments:
Engine ran smoothly has potential for more.

Bhav was unsure what this mighty beast would produce but its all about torque and not bhp when it comes to V8s.

Chris's comments:
A very nice motor, performed well just need some NOS and a decent rev counter.

Rob was happy with his output as it produced more than what he was expecting. He was exceptionally pleased to beat Phil's torque output (which no doubt Phil will hear of for a while!)

Chris's comments:
Nice motor and performed well.

After a bit of tom foolery by Chris with Caz's car on the rollers it was up for its proper run. Unlike these XR4's no tweeking was necessary on this Lion!. Caz was very happy with the output produced, as Dave will vouch for as he's heard nothing else.

Chris's comments:
Very nice that ran well but a bit lean on idle.

Phil was a bit diappointed with this but said his student grant doesnt stretch too far for modding his car.

Chris's comments:
It doesn't feel quite as urgent as others I have tested.
